Signs Your Stone Needs Polishing

Stone that looks flat even after it’s clean is usually ready for polishing:

  • Lost shine. The floor or counter looks cloudy or flat compared to when it was installed.
  • Dull traffic areas. Kitchens, halls, and entries look worn while corners still shine.
  • Colors and veining look faded. A dull surface hides the depth of the stone.
  • Light etching. Shallow etch marks can sometimes be polished out; deeper ones need honing first.
  • Getting ready for an event or a sale. Polished stone makes a strong first impression.

Our Stone Polishing Process

  1. Inspection. We identify the stone and check for scratches and etching that need honing before polishing.
  2. Preparation. We protect baseboards, cabinets, and adjoining surfaces. Our technicians can move small, light furniture. We don’t move heavy or fragile items, so please clear those before we arrive.
  3. Cleaning. We clean the stone so the polish is applied to a clean surface.
  4. Honing, if needed. Deeper scratches and etching are removed first with stone honing.
  5. Polishing. We polish the stone with products suited to the material, working until the shine is even across the surface.
  6. Sealing. We seal the stone to help protect the finish. If we seal, allow 24 to 48 hours for the sealer to cure before normal use and mopping.

Aftercare for Polished Stone

  • Let the sealer cure. Wait 24 to 48 hours before normal use and mopping.
  • Dust mop often. Fine grit is what dulls polished stone fastest.
  • Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Acidic and abrasive cleaners dull the shine.
  • Wipe spills right away. Acidic drinks and foods can etch the polish in minutes.

How long the shine lasts depends on foot traffic and daily care.

We polish marble, travertine, limestone, granite, and terrazzo. Some stones, like slate and many sandstones, are not meant to have a high polish, and we’ll recommend a better option.

Polishing can remove very light surface marks. Deeper scratches and etching need honing first, then polishing.

Polished stone is smoother than honed stone and can be slick when wet. For bathrooms and entries, a honed finish or anti-slip treatment may be a better fit.

Yes. We polish countertops as well as floors and seal them afterward to help protect the finish.

It depends on traffic and care. With regular maintenance, about every 2 years is a good reference point for busy areas.
