Signs Your Countertops Need Attention

Countertops take more daily abuse than almost any other surface in the house. Look for:

  • Dull rings and etch marks. Lemon juice, wine, vinegar, and tomato sauce can etch marble and other calcium-based stone, leaving dull spots.
  • Dark oil stains. Cooking oil can soak into unsealed or under-sealed granite and stone near the stove.
  • Water absorbing into the stone. If a few drops darken the surface instead of beading up, the sealer has worn off.
  • Hard water film around sinks. Southern California’s hard water leaves white mineral deposits around faucets and on vanity tops.
  • Dirty or stained grout on tiled counters. Grout lines on tile countertops and backsplashes trap food and grease.
  • Fine scratches and lost shine. Daily use slowly wears down a polished finish.

Our Countertop Restoration Process

  1. Inspection. We identify the stone or tile, test how the surface absorbs water, and note stains, etching, and wear.
  2. Preparation. We protect cabinets, backsplashes, walls, and fixtures. Please clear small appliances and items off the counters before we arrive.
  3. Deep cleaning. We remove grease, residue, and mineral film with products matched to the material. On natural stone we use stone-safe products.
  4. Stain treatment. We treat stains that have soaked into the stone. Some deep or old stains can be lightened but not fully removed, and we’ll tell you up front.
  5. Honing and polishing, if needed. Etched or scratched stone can be refined with honing and brought back to its shine with polishing.
  6. Sealing. We apply a sealer to help the surface resist stains and spills. If we seal, allow 24 to 48 hours for the sealer to cure before normal use and mopping.

Aftercare: Keeping Countertops Looking New

  • Let the sealer cure. Allow 24 to 48 hours after sealing before normal use, including cooking and wiping down the counters.
  • Wipe spills quickly. Acidic foods and drinks and cooking oil cause the most damage when left to sit.
  • Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Skip vinegar, bleach, and all-purpose cleaners on natural stone.
  • Use cutting boards and trivets. They protect the finish from scratches and heat.
  • Do a water test now and then. If water darkens the stone instead of beading, it’s time to reseal.

How long the finish and sealer last depends on how heavily the counters are used and how they’re cleaned.

Etching is damage to the surface, not a stain, so cleaning alone won’t remove it. Honing and polishing can usually smooth out etch marks and bring back an even finish.

Put a few drops of water on the counter and wait a few minutes. If the stone darkens or absorbs the water, it needs sealing. If the water beads up, the sealer is still working.

Often, yes. Oil stains that have soaked into stone can usually be drawn out or lightened. Very old or deep stains may not come out completely, and we’ll let you know what to expect after we inspect them.

Yes. We clean the tile and the grout lines, and we can seal the grout or apply a grout color sealer to give it a uniform look.

Allow 24 to 48 hours for the sealer to cure before normal use, including cooking and wiping down the counters.
